The KARE Volunteer Driver Program is a local service that helps people in Strathmore get to important places like healthcare and/or medical appointments when they don’t have access to reliable transportation. The program is run by kind and caring volunteers who use their own vehicles to provide safe and dependable rides.

How Does It Work?
Using the KARE Volunteer Driver Program is easy! Here’s how it works:
- Request an Application: Below you will find the client guide and application for the KARE program, please refer to the client criteria in the application guideline. Complete the attached application and submit it to fcss@strathmore.ca for review and approval. Once accepted into the program you will be able to book a KARE driver by calling the FCSS office at (403) 934-9090. Please be reminded, a three day minimum notice is required for all bookings.
- Enjoy the Journey: A friendly volunteer driver will pick you up and make sure you get to your destination safely and on time.
- Support the Program: Ensure that you are able to pay the fee for the ride. If you are not requiring support with this program but would like to support through donation please contact the FCSS office for additional information.

How do I book a ride? |
Call (403) 934-9090 at least three business days before your trip. Be prepared to share details like your address, destination, appointment time, and return time. |
Is there a cost to use the program? |
Yes, there is a small reimbursement fee to cover the driver’s expenses. For example, trips within Strathmore are $0.70 per km, and trips to Calgary are $75.00 for a round trip. |
Can I bring a friend or helper with me? |
Yes! Companions or helpers are welcome to join you on your trip at no extra cost. Be sure to let us know when you book your ride. |
How far in advance should I book my trip? |
Trips must be booked at least three business days in advance to ensure we can match you with a volunteer driver. We recommend booking appointments well in advance. |
What happens if my ride needs to be canceled? |
If you need to cancel, call the FCSS office as soon as possible. If the cancellation is due to weather or another unforeseen event, we’ll notify you as soon as we can. |
Can I use the program if I have a walker or folding wheelchair? |
Yes! However, you must be able to transfer your walker or wheelchair into the vehicle on your own and without assistance form the KARE driver. |
Do the drivers stay at my appointment? |
Drivers are not required to stay at your appointment, but they will provide you with their phone number so you can contact them when you’re ready to be picked up. |
How do I volunteer for the KARE program? |
