Every four years Strathmore holds a Municipal Election where residents elect a Mayor and six Councillors. In Strathmore, Council members are elected at-large, which means the Mayor and Councillors represent the entire population. Strathmore does not have wards, voters in the town may choose up to six candidates for Council, and one candidate for Mayor.

The last election was held October 18, 2021 to determine the 2021-2025 Strathmore Town Council.

The next general election will be Monday, October 20, 2025.

Nomination Period: January 1, 2025 – September 22, 2025   

Nomination Day Deadline: September 22, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. 

Election Day: October 20, 2025, polls will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m.   


Election Candidates

Individuals may submit a Notice of Intent either before they have been nominated or when they are nominated. A person is considered nominated when their Nomination Paper and Candidate Acceptance have been accepted by the returning officer.

The Register of Candidates is a record of all candidates who have given notice to the Town of Strathmore that they intent to seek nomination for office in the next election. This list is organized chronologically from most to least recent.

Candidates must submit a Notice of Intent in order to seek and spend campaign contributions.

Legislative changes for the 2025 Municipal Election

On October 18, 2024, Municipal Affairs proclaimed the Municipal Statutes Amendment Act which made several amendments to the Local Authorities Elections Act (LAEA) and the Municipal Government Act (MGA). The amendments related to municipal elections came into effect on October 31, 2024.

Key Legislative Changes (Effective October 31, 2024)

  • Automated Voting: Prohibited.
  • Nomination Period: Extended from January 1 to Nomination Day (September 22, 2025).
  • Campaign Limits: Alberta-wide limits introduced.
  • Third-Party Advertising: Registration and financial disclosure required; capped at $5,000.
  • Campaign Contributions: Union and corporate donations permitted.
  • Voter Identification: Vouching allowed only for address.
  • Recall Petitions: Validation responsibility transferred to Minister.
  • Electors Register: Municipalities must create a Permanent Electors Register in partnership with Elections Alberta.
  • Councillor Training: Orientation training is now mandatory.
  • Special Ballots: Expanded application eligibility for electors unable to vote at Advanced polls or on Election Day.
