Information for voters

Every Canadian citizen has the right to vote. It is how Canadians choose which leaders represent them. Your community is shaped by the outcome of an election. When you take part in an election and express your view, you make democracy work.

In the next municipal election, Strathmore voters will vote to elect their Mayor, six Councillors, and School Board Trustees. Voting for your Mayor and Councillors gives you a say in the direction the Town of Strathmore will take. This includes changes and additions to services that impact residents, such as police, fire, roads, parks, recreation programs, waste collection,  water, and municipal enforcement. School Trustees are elected to make decisions on budgets and facilities in your school system.

Why does the Town of Strathmore have elections?

Alberta is made up of cities, towns, villages, hamlets, summer villages, municipal districts, and specialized municipalities. These Municipalities are considered corporations and are given powers from the Province of Alberta through various legislation but primarily the Municipal Government Act (MGA).

Under the MGA, municipalities are granted powers by the province for the purpose of

  • Providing good government,
    • Fostering the well‑being of the environment,
    • Fostering the economic development of the municipality,
  • to provide services, facilities or other things that, in the opinion of council, are necessary or desirable for all or a part of the municipality,
  • to develop and maintain safe and viable communities, and
  • to work collaboratively with neighbouring municipalities to plan, deliver and fund intermunicipal services.

These powers are the responsibility of our elected governing body called Town Council. Under the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA), elections are held every four years to provide residents the opportunity to choose their representatives on Strathmore Town Council.

  • Are at least 18 years old.
  • Are a Canadian citizen.
  • Are a resident of Strathmore.
(To determine if you are a Town of Strathmore resident please review, Section 48 - Rules of Residence of the Local Authorities Elections Act. Note: You do not have to own property to vote. Property ownership is not a determining factor to vote, all citizens who meet the eligibility requirements above are eligible to vote.)

How do I register to vote?

New for 2025: With the proclamation of the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, municipalities are required to maintain a Permanent Electors Register of residents who are eligible to vote. Any individual who wishes to vote on Election Day must first be registered. Before you can receive a ballot at the voting polls, you must sign the elector register stating that you meet the qualifications above. Rather than receiving a voter card in the mail, voters fill out this form at polling stations before voting. This form only takes a couple minutes to complete, but you can also fill out the elector register form in advance and turn in a hard copy at the voting station, if you wish.

Information from the Permanent Electors Register will be shared with Elections Alberta and the Town of Strathmore as per the Local Authorities Elections Act (LAEA) section 49. The information collected will only be used to verify the identification of an elector when compiling or revising the Permanent Electors Register.

More information to come.
