Program Philosophy

The primary purpose of the Gleichen Minor Hockey Association also known as Gleichen Pond Hockey (GPH) is to contribute to the development of our youth (ages 4-17 years) through the game of hockey. GPH is committed to providing our young people the opportunity to have fun on the ice while learning the basic skills of ice skating and how to play the game of hockey. Our program is available to all interested youth regardless of socio/economic background.
As a team sport, hockey affirms the importance of commitment, self-discipline, and sportsmanship among participants. It is the rare child who grows up to become an NHL All Star. Our commitment is to assure that all young people who participate will develop skills and values which will have lifelong benefit to themselves and to society.

Specific benefits participants of youth hockey receive include:

• Development of the skills necessary to play ice hockey
• Knowledge of the rules and strategies of the game
• Knowledge of conditioning techniques that affect short and long-term health and performance
• Enjoyment and recreation
• Commitment to teamwork
• Good sportsmanship

We place a high priority on effort, recreation and fair play. The focus of our program is on the physical and emotional self-confidence of the player, a cooperative team environment and the highest degree of sportsmanship.
We make a clear distinction between the process of trying to win (which is the goal of the game) and winning itself (the outcome of the game). Too many people confuse the two. It is the process that is important, not the outcome. Competitive hockey (and for that matter recreational hockey or any game) will cease to be fun for kids if the outcome of the game is what enthralls or seduces us.

Mandatory Arena Membership $50.00 (Single) $100.00 (Family)
The skate pass allows your child and/or family to take advantage of family/public skate sessions at the Gleichen arena and is valid for the entire season. Upon registration you will be provided a membership number that must be presented for Public Skate Times.

Our full-year season is October - April. We have a Fall (Oct 12-Dec 16) and Winter (Jan 4-April 14) seasons. Each season has the option of full-time swimmers practicing Tues AND Thurs 6-7pm or part-time Tues OR Thurs 6pm-7pm.

Our "Swim Like a Dolphin" program for our u10 athletes is a fantastic opportunity to grow grassroots water polo. It makes learning to swim fun and develops a love for water polo. When they are done with the entire program, they should feel confident in their swimming skills and be prepared to play water polo if they choose to continue with a club in a recreational or competitive environment.

CanSkate - small groups. Must be 4 years old at time of registration. Must be able to stand up after falling and move forward on their own without help.

Skill/Edge Training for Ice Sports (Hockey and Ringette)

Pre-STAR - skaters that are still in CanSkate but are interested in learning Figure Skating

STARSkate SMALL GROUP SIZES. CanSkate is the only national learn-to-skate program endorsed by Hockey Canada. Learn balance, agility and control skills that can be used in any ice sport.

The Strathmore Silver Sharks Swim Club is for competitive swimmers from ages 6 to 18. We have multiple levels of swimming which may be as little as twice per week for 30 minutes, and up to 5 days a week, a total of almost 10 hours of swimming. We are a winter club and our season runs from October 1st, until the end of May. Cost varies depending on the swimming level, but starts at about $520 and goes up to $1500 per swimmer. We have worked with the Town of Strathmore, Swim Alberta, Swimming Canada, and Lifesaving Society of Canada to come up with an excellent Return to Swimming plan. Contact us for more details! We are a friendly group of active people, a 50/50 mix of singles and couples, from various backgrounds and ages who enjoy dancing, music and having fun. We meet every Wednesday at Strathmore Civic Centre, 120 Brent Boulevard, from 7 - 9 pm. Several theme dances are held during the year and other events like a Christmas party and summer BBQ. We welcome new dancers any time throughout our dance season, October to May - no experience and no partner needed.

Our mission is simple - to have FUN! on the dance floor. It's a great way to meet new people and socialize. Dress is casual. Wear comfortable, indoor shoes suitable for a gym floor.

Square dancing is easy - there's no fancy footwork or lead/follow partner. It's the Caller's (dance instructor) job to tell you what steps to do and when. If you can walk, you can square dance. The most often heard comment, "I had no idea square dancing would be THIS much fun!"

Wheatland Whirlers Square & Round Dance Club was started in 1974 in Strathmore as a not-for-profit, recreational club. We are one of seven Modern Square Dance clubs in Calgary and area, and there are many similar clubs throughout Alberta, Canada, United States, and globally.

Guitar lessons for ages 6+

Robert teaches classical, electric, and acoustic guitar.
$100 a month, roughly $25 a lesson. Each lesson is half hour.

Start second week of September/ when registered. Robert believes music should be fun as this is how students learn. Lessons will consist of some theory, as well as playing/ practicing out of a method book and creating music themselves.

I teach guitar in my home to individual students of any skill level, almost any age (kids over 8 yrs have better success). I've been teaching here in Strathmore for 16 years now. I concentrate on getting people playing first, then develop reading and theory skills as they progress. I also teach bass, and help people with finding an instrument to suit their budget and interests.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER ADVOCATE WITH STRATHMORE REGIONAL VICTIM SERVICES

What is Strathmore Regional Victim Services?
SRVSS is a Not-For-Profit organization that provides 24hr Crisis Response to victims of crime and tragedy within the communities and areas served by the Strathmore, Chestermere, Langdon and Gleichen RCMP. We also assist individuals by providing victim’s rights, emotional support, referral to resources and information on the Criminal Justice System. We provide court support by way of orientation and accompaniment if needed.

What is a Volunteer Advocate?
A Volunteer Advocate is a trained compassionate individual who volunteers to provide crisis intervention to victims of crime and traumatic events under the guidance of our dedicated staff.

Requirements:
You must be at minimum 18 years of age, have a vehicle and valid driver’s license.
You must be an excellent communicator and able to converse effectively in English.
You must be able to commit to a minimum of 60 on call hours per month.
You must be able to pass an RCMP Enhanced Security Clearance and Interview Process.
Once accepted you must complete approximately 80 hours online eLearning and able to attend regularly scheduled team meetings.

Applications are always welcome, must live in service area (Strathmore, Langdon, Chestermere or Gleichen)

Brentwood's Learn and Play Before and After is a great way for kids to socialize, explore, create and grow. The program is full of open ended toys that grow your child's creativity, problem solving skills and social skills. We create both product art and process art through teacher directed crafts and our Makerspace. This year we have added a loose parts area where students can explore different materials before creating and building masterpieces. Brentwood's Learn and Play is a firm believer in getting outside and enjoying the fresh air so be sure to dress for the weather.

We currently accept Ecole Brentwood/Brentwood Elementary students between kindergarten and grade 6. Our program is open between 6:30 am and 6:00 pm Monday to Friday and includes PD/FLEX Fridays as well as Teachers Convention week.

At Brentwood's Learn and Play Playschool we follow the Pocket of Playschool curriculum with bits and pieces of the Flight curriculum. Both are very hands on engaging curriculums that allow the children to learn through play, creativity and exploring. Throughout the day we will participate in teacher led activities such as group discussions, story time, songs and journal activities. They will include both large and small group activities. Students will engage in outside time when weather permits or gym time when it is to cold. During playtime they have the opportunity to explore six different centers which include a literacy center, dramatic play, building, sensory, math/science and art. Our main areas of focus on are social development, fine motor skills and gross motor skills but we also introduce the alphabet, different reading skills as well as math skills. Centers are full of different materials, including loose parts and are changing constantly. We strongly believe that when provided with the right materials children grow naturally through curiosity and play.
