Position Summary:

Reporting to the Parks Supervisor, the Parks Operator position is both a strategic and hands-on role that provides an array of support around the Strathmore community.  We are looking for a self-driven and highly motivated individual to join the Operations team.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Operate a variety of light and heavy-duty equipment (mowers, weed trimmers, backpack blowers, rototillers, skid steer, tractor, etc.)
  • Maintain various maintenance equipment and tools
  • Maintain outdoor parks amenities for public use and assist in community and civic events
  • Maintain parks, pathways, green spaces, flower beds, planters, trees and horticultural displays
  • Maintain sidewalks, curbs, gutters and asphalt pavement
  • Coordinate as a team to keep pathways, sidewalks, roads and facilities clear during winter snow events according to priority routes
  • Respond to and investigate service requests and help resolve operational concerns
  • Ensure administrative duties of the position are performed (work orders, checklists, FLHA’s and purchase orders)
  • Assist in the repair of Town Infrastructure as required
  • Assist in training of Seasonal Parks Staff, leading by example while providing them with day-to-day coaching of duties and organizational policies
  • Assist other departments with operating duties as required

Working Conditions:

  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and physically able to perform required duties
  • Capable of walking, sitting, lifting and standing for extended periods of time
  • Required to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide their own CSA approved steel toed boots

Required Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Class 3Q must be obtained within the 3-month probationary period at the cost of the candidate (training is provided)
  • 1 – 2 years of experience in a parks environment, with municipal experience considered an asset
  • Certificate and/or related experience in Horticulture, Arboriculture, Sports field, Irrigation, Cemetery and Landscaping is an asset
  • Consent to disclosure of a Criminal Record Check and provision of a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract
  • Standard First Aid CPR & AED Level C (Or ability to obtain in first 3 months at candidate’s cost)

How to

The Town of Strathmore has implemented a Mandatory Vaccination Policy requiring all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. Exemptions are available for those who cannot be fully vaccinated on the basis of a protected legal ground (i.e., medical, religious). The successful candidate will be asked to provide proof of vaccination or request an exemption as part of the recruitment process.


The work week is typically Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week which will include weekend and statutory holiday coverage shifts on a rotational basis, as required.
