Economic Development Officer

Position Overview:

Helping our economy to grow is a priority for the Town of Strathmore and is one of the key priorities for Council during their term. Several major projects are underway and recently completed, and the Town is motivated to continue this progress.

The Economic Development Officer will be a key contributor to the success of our local economy. As part of the Communications, Marketing and Economic Development Team you will help to write the next chapter in the story of our community. Through bold vision, innovative strategies, and professional program delivery, this role will help us to achieve commercial and industrial economic development with a focus on sustainable growth.

You are curious about the economic trends in our region, enhancing our competitive position, and assisting with achieving our goals. You are also prepared to hit the ground running to achieve Council’s strategic priorities that includes the creation of a long-term Economic Development Strategy.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Coordinate the development, approval and implementation of the long-term Economic Development Strategy as well as other key economic development initiatives as established in the Town’s Corporate Business Plan
  • Attract and retain economic investments and new businesses
  • Develop, implement, and manage programs, policies, and services for business and investment attractions, ensuring alignment with the strategic goals and priorities of Council
  • Organize and facilitate community meetings and other activities to ensure all members are engaged in economic development initiatives
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with external stakeholders and potential partners, including but not limited to the Strathmore Wheatland Chamber of Commerce, Siksika Nation, Wheatland County, economic development agencies, post-secondary institutions, agricultural groups, tourism groups, real estate investors, and other levels of government
  • Work collaboratively with all internal departments to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated delivery of all services and programs
  • Prepare timely reports and presentations for Council regarding economic development initiatives
  • Refer community members to appropriate small business and employment development support
  • Manage investment leads, working with staff to research appropriate land development sites and facilities for clients
  • Participate in departmental and corporate strategic initiatives, special projects and committees to meet the long-term goals and objectives of the Town of Strathmore
  • Collect, interpret, and report on regional real estate and economic trends
  • Represent the Town of Strathmore at industry conferences, trade shows, and forums

Competencies & Behaviours:

  • Develop key messages, identifying target audiences, setting SMART objectives, establishing clear metrics
  • Strategy development: Working with program partners to determine goals, then work back to an achievable plan
  • Excellent overall communications skills are required – especially active listening
  • Knowledge of Town of Strathmore bylaws and policies is considered an asset
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Sense of initiative, attention to detail, ability to manage multiple priorities while respecting deadlines
  • Good interpersonal, customer service and public relations skills e.g. is informative, accurate, flexible, inclusive and adaptable
  • Ability to work in teams and independently with all types of people.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot and solve problems in the best interest of the Town
  • Ability to exercise good judgement in keeping with the goals of the Town
  • Must be a self-starter willing to work with minimal supervision
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Working knowledge of all Microsoft programs
  • Up-to-date experience and working knowledge of social media and cloud-based design programs

Required Education & Experience:

  • A post-secondary degree in economic development, commerce/business administration, marketing, or planning. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • Interest in pursing the Certification Program for Economic Developers
  • Membership and/or credentials with an economic development association is an asset
  • A minimum of four years of related experience in community economic development, municipal government, business development, or similar organization
  • Successful history of developing and implementing project plans, followed by evaluation using quantifiable metrics
  • Experience &/or exposure in the development and corporate long-range plans as well as budget formulation and reporting processes
  • Well-developed communication skills, with proven experience in negotiations, sales, and audience engagement
  • Comfortable with common office software, with the ability to learn new software tools as required
  • Maintain a valid Alberta Class 5 License

Compensation:

The Town of Strathmore total compensation package includes a competitive salary, comprehensive insurance and benefits package with flexible health spending component, and LAPP pension eligibility.

Hours:

This position requires the individual to work 35 hrs/week.
