Position Summary: Reporting to the Public Works Supervisor, the Public Works Operator is a key contributor within the Operations Department.  This position requires both a strategic and hands-on role in providing an array of services around the Strathmore community.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Day to day duties as assigned by the Public Works Supervisor and or Lead hand
  • Operate a variety of light and/or heavy equipment
  • Conduct ditch repairs, contouring grades and finishing work with a John Deere excavator
  • Maintain sidewalks, curbs, gutters, pedestrian walkways and asphalt pavement.
  • Maintain roads via sweeping, pothole repairs, crack sealing and line painting.
  • Repair and replace street signs.
  • Assist in the repair of Town Infrastructure as required.
  • Assist other departments with operating duties as required.
  • Other duties as required within the department.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Must have a minimum of Grade 12 education.
  • Must have excavator experience
  • Must have experience operating hydro-vac unit
  • Must have experience using a variety of vehicles and light/heavy equipment, including hand and power tools,
  • Experience operating graders, wheel loaders and/or other equipment will be considered an asset.
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 Operators License with Q endorsement will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid First Aid/CPR certificate.
  • Must provide a Criminal Record check and a clean Driver’s Abstract.

Working Conditions:

  • This position will require sitting, lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for long periods, work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Driving is a requirement of this position.
  • This position is classified as Safety Sensitive and an Essential Service.
