Strathmore Handi-Bus

Strathmore Handi-bus provides safe, courteous, timely and cost-effective wheelchair accessible transportation service for seniors and persons with physical disabilities that are residents of the Town of Strathmore and Wheatland County. Temporarily disabled persons and residents are eligible to utilize the service however a Temporary Handicapped placard must be provided. 

Strathmore Handi-bus Association is a non-profit organization funded by the Town of Strathmore, Wheatland County and private donors. It operates under authority of Alberta Transportation and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of individuals from different parts of the community. It is the mandate of Strathmore Handi-bus to provide transportation services to persons with disabilities and seniors over 65 years of age. To fulfill our clients’ transportation needs our current fleet includes 6 wheelchair accessible vans and a bus, also wheelchair accessible, for group bookings.

It is a challenge to provide personal, unique and affordable transportation for those who rely on this type of service. Your support and understanding is needed to maximize the use of Strathmore Handi-bus resources without minimizing the service.

Safety precautions are in place for clients and the driver. Only one client, with a companion if needed, will be accommodated per trip. All occupants must wear face masks at all times. Drivers will be required to wear gloves, as well as a face mask, if they are in direct contact with a client. The vehicle will also be sanitized between every client trip.

These safety precautions necessitate some limitations in availability due to vehicle capacity limitations.

Service Hours and Fees

Please contact us during regular office hours as below.

Office hours are 8:30 am – 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday
Service hours are 6:00 am – 6:00 pm Monday to Friday

Booking the Handi-bus 

Bookings and appointments must be booked directly through dispatch during office hours. A minimum of two business days notice is required for bookings, anything less may not be accomodated and is at the discretion of the dispatcher. Messaged left over the weekend or on holidays will be returned on the next business day. When booking a trip, clients must provide the following information:

  • Date and time of appointment
  • Number of riders (Including companion or assistant)
  • Address the client is to picked up at
  • Duration of stay at destination
  • Any special requirements

The dispatcher will advise you of expected pick up time based on our commitment to honor clients schedule needs in a cost effective fashion.

Companions and Medical Assistants 

One companion or Medical Assistant may accompany the client at no cost if the client requires assistance and must be communicated to dispatch at time of booking. Strathmore Handibus reserves the right to require a Medical Assistant if the client’s condition compromises their safety and comfort or other clients or the driver.

Medical Assistants are required to assist with:

  • Loading and unloading of the person with a disability
  • Behaviour of a client with a disability
  • Medical and hygienic issues of the client with a disability
Wheelchairs and Scooters Requirements 

Strathmore Handibus requires that all wheelchairs, power wheelchairs and scooters comply with WC19 Industry Standards and have the following:

  • Four permanently attached and labeled securement points that can withstand the forces of a 30 mph, 20g impact
  • A pelvic seat belt
  • Functioning brake
  • Footrests

Strathmore Handibus reserves the right to decline service if we cannot safely secure the mobility device.

Strathmore Handi-bus does not transport clients in Broda chairs.  

Client preparedness 

We require clients to be ready fifteen minutes early however the driver may not arrive until 15 minutes following scheduled pickup time. Your patience is appreciated.

Payment Options 

Clients are required to make payment at the beginning of the ride. Cash, cheque or pre-purchased coupons are acceptable methods of payment. We do not accept debit or credit cards. Coupons may be purchased in advance from Dispatch. Cheques should be made payable to Town of Strathmore.


Clients who are required to cancel a booking are encouraged to do so 24 hours in advance directly with dispatch. Late cancellations will be charged a $25.00 fee. A cancellation is considered late if no notice is given - 1) At least 24 hours prior to scheduled pickup time during the business week, or 2) during regular hours of the business day prior to the start of a weekend or long weekend, if the pickup is scheduled for the first business day following a weekend or long weekend. A cancellation charge of the full round trip amount will be charged for all late or no-notice cancellations
