Significant increase in affordable home building.

STRATHMORE, ALBERTA | APRIL 5, 2022 – STRATHMORE, ALBERTA | April 5, 2022

Building permits for new homes in the first quarter of 2022 show an impressive gain over 2021. Permits totalling almost $4.5 million in estimated construction value were approved from January to March 2022, compared to $1.5 million last year.

“Strathmore has so much to offer – it’s natural that we’re seeing more people buying homes in our community. 2021 was a busy year for home building in town so it’s exciting to see that momentum carry into 2022,” said Mayor Pat Fule.

Fourteen dwellings were approved in the first quarter, compared to 5 in 2021. Duplexes and semi-detached homes accounted for five of the homes.
“Duplexes are a great starter home for young families, and they are one of the most affordable types of homes. Seeing an increase in this type of home could provide some relief for Strathmore’s affordable housing market,” said Chuck Procter, Manager of Development Services.

Overall building permits, including commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential totalled $5.2 million and 40 permits. This is an increase across every category from 2021 statistics. A complete report is available at Strathmore.ca/BuildingStatistics.

“A strong construction sector has helped Strathmore’s economic recovery over the past year. The Town is well positioned to see more investments through the rest of 2022,” said Kristen Shima, Economic Development Coordinator. “We’re continuing our marketing, policy, and investment attraction efforts to bring new businesses and residents to the community.”
