Council Meeting Highlights - February 19, 2025

Meeting Date: February 19, 2025 

In attendance: Mayor Fule, Councillor Langmaid, Councillor Mitzner, Councillor Montgomery, Councillor Peterson, Councillor Wegener, and Deputy Mayor Wiley. 

  • Council Amended the Agenda to add 9.1, Letter of Support – Community Peace Officer Operation Command and removed 10.3, Land Use Bylaw Amending Bylaw No. 25-06 (Edgefield Phase 3).
  • Council adopted the minutes from the February 5, 2025 Regular Council Meeting.

Closed Meeting

  • Following the Closed Meeting Council directed Administration to authorize the letter discussed during the In-camera session.
  • They also adopted an amendment to the 2025 Operating Budget which would approve funding for several Strategic Objectives and Emergent Items in the amount of $325,000,  with funds coming from the Financial Stability Reserve.

Business

9.1     Letter of Support – Community Peace Officer Operation Command

  • On February 14, 2025, Administration received a letter from Minister Ellis, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services, requesting that municipalities, temporarily, align Community Peace Officers' operations with, or under, the RCMP to ensure law enforcement efforts are collaborative and coordinated to combat illegal fentanyl trafficking and consumption.
  • Council authorized Mayor Fule to sign a letter supporting this request.

Bylaws

10.1   Municipal Policing Committee Bylaw No. 25-05

  • Council adopted Municipal Policing Committee Bylaw No. 25-05
  • This is a new bylaw being mandated by the Province, directing the Town to establish a Policing Committee that will act as a liaison between Council, the RCMP and the community.

10.2   Land Use Bylaw Amending Bylaw No. 24-23 (416 and 417 80B Archie Klaiber Trail)

  • Council gave First Reading to Bylaw No. 24-23, being a bylaw to amend the Land Use Bylaw No. 14-11.
  • This Bylaw is regarding an application to redesignate 416 and 417 80B Archie Klaiber Trail (Block 31 Plan 7260 JK and Block 6 Plan 9411772) to facilitate the development of childcare services.
  • A Public Hearing for Bylaw No. 24-23 has been scheduled for March 19, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers.

10.3  Land Use Amending Bylaw No. 25-04 (Lakewood Phase 2B)

  • Council gave First Reading to Bylaw No. 25-04, being a bylaw to amend the Land Use Bylaw No. 14-11.
  • This Bylaw is in regards to a request that side yard setbacks for all of the proposed housing types within Lakewood Phase 2B be reduced from 1.5m to 1.2m.
  • A Public Hearing for Bylaw No. 25-04 has been scheduled for March 19, 2025, at 7:10 p.m. or  following the conclusion of the Public Hearing for Bylaw No. 24-23 at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers.
