Council Meeting Highlights, April 5, 2023

In attendance: Mayor Fule, Deputy Mayor Wegener, Councillor Peterson, Councillor Mitzner, Councillor Montgomery, Councillor Langmaid, Councillor Wiley

  • Council approved the use of $55,000 from the Sanitary Capital Reserve to complete the Ridge Road Sanitary Project
  • Council gave first, second and third reading to the Boards and Committees Bylaw No. 23-12. The amendment will add FCSS Advisory Board to the list of boards and committees governed by the Bylaw. Next steps for the Town will be to advertise board vacancies and bring forward the applications to Council for consideration.
  • Council adopted the Citizenship Awards Policy No. 1214. The Citizenship Awards are presented to elementary, junior high, and high school students in Strathmore who demonstrate outstanding citizenship within the community.
  • Council approved the motion to direct Administration to obtain a minimum of two, preferably three, updated appraisals on the undeveloped property east of Kinsmen Lake that was donated to WHMB conditional upon the construction of a new Wheatland Lodge. Furthermore, Council committed to the development of a Wheatland Lodge contingent on:
    • the capital requisition not exceeding $566,625, excepting for any increase resulting from a lower average value of the land appraisals than the current estimated land value of $1,400,000,
    • all parties agreeing on the valuation of the land being donated by the Town.
    • The operating requisition not increasing more than the Calgary CPI index year over year,
    • WHMB lobbying the Province for support and resources for the proposed development,
    • WHMB receiving the Provincial Partnership Program Grant in the amount of $7140,000 and
    • the proposed development receiving full regional support in the amounts provided for the one-time capital requisition;

      Council also authorized the Mayor to sign letters to Canada Housing and Mortgage Corporation and Government of Alberta in support of the development of the 120-unit Wheatland Lodge
