Highlights from the Regular Meeting of Council

Wednesday, February 17, 2021

In attendance: Mayor Fule, Deputy Mayor Peterson, Councillor Bauer, Councillor Cockx, Councillor Corbiell, Councillor Montgomery, Councillor Sobol

The Town of Strathmore Council discussed several bylaws and initiatives:

  • Council accepted an update on Strathmore Municipal Building costs for information.
  • Penalties on overdue utility accounts were discussed, and the issue will return to Council at a later date.
  • A rebranding initiative for the Town was approved by Council.
  • Council approved a project at Highway 1 and Westmount Road to reduce wait times at the intersection.
  • The installation of solar panels on the Strathmore Municipal Building was discussed and approved.
  • Reports from Councillors regarding the Library Board, Strathmore Wheatland Chamber of Commerce, Wheatland Housing, and Community Futures Wildrose were received.
  • Council directed Administration to provide a report and recommendations on the potential for tiered business license fees.
  • Notice of Motion was provided regarding a question on the Land Use Bylaw and how business use of residences in high-density areas can be improved.
  • Five bylaws were reviewed by Council:
    • Bylaw 21-08 Land Use Bylaw Amendment Bylaw - Lakewood Duplexes Direct Control received first reading. A public hearing is scheduled for March 17, 2021
    • Bylaw 20-15 Prohibited Business Bylaw received first reading. Public engagement will take place over the next two weeks.
    • Bylaw 21-11 Fees Bylaw Amendment Bylaw passed first, second, and third readings
    • Bylaw 21-10 Water Administration Bylaw Amendment Bylaw passed first, second, and third readings.
    • Bylaw 21-03 Water Utility Bylaw Amendment Bylaw passed first, second, and third readings.
